The brain undergoes oxidative damage in aging and Alzheimer’s disease. People who eat diets rich in antioxidants may have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Many substances, including vitamins such as vitamin E and C, can act as antioxidants. Combinations of antioxidants may be more effective than single substances. This study will compare effects of different types of antioxidants in Alzheimer’s disease to help us select the best combinations of antioxidants in future, larger studies, and assess how well and safely different types of antioxidants can be used in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. We will measure whether these antioxidants affect levels of chemicals in blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF; note: two spinal taps are required for this study) in a direction suggesting that they are likely to benefit people with Alzheimer’s. The chemicals we will measure are markers of processes that go wrong in Alzheimer’s and are called Biomarkers.
