The Edward A. Strecker Award is offered annually by the Pennsylvania
Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Health System in memory of the late Edward A. Strecker,
MD, distinguished clinician, Chief Medical Officer at The Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital from 1920-1928, and
President of the American Psychiatric Association in 1943. Created to stimulate the
therapeutic efforts of young psychiatrists, this prize honors an individual who has made a
significant contribution in the field of clinical psychiatry. Dr.Spiegel is the 1995 Strecker
Award Recipient, and delivered the Strecker Award Lecture, “Minding the Body:
Psychotherapy for Extreme Situations” at The Institute in Philadelphia, PA, on November 6,
1995.
