Behavioral Neuroendocrinology
The Behavioral Neuroendocrinology Program focuses on the interaction between reproductive hormones and brain function. Research efforts of our lab are concentrated in two areas: (1) the reproductive endocrine status of women with affective disorders, and (2) the neurobiology of the effects of hormone therapy in aging women.
The following is a list of research studies currently open to enrollment within The Behavioral Neuroendocrinology Program. Patient referrals to our studies are welcomed.
Reproductive Endocrine Function and Mood in Women with Bipolar Disorder
The focus of this study is to examine mood over the menstrual cycle and reproductive hormones in women between the ages of 18 and 40 who are being treated for bipolar disorder. Women who are currently receiving treatment for diagnosed bipolar disorder and who are not on oral contraceptives are invited to participate. Participants use software to track their mood over the course of three months, in addition to tracking their ovulation during this time and undergoing a total of five blood draws to examine reproductive hormone function. Participants are compensated up to $175. Ultimately, this research aims to develop better treatment strategies over the lifespan for women with bipolar disorder. Lamotrigine in the Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in Women of Reproductive Age
We are looking for women, ages 18-45, with diagnosed bipolar disorder who are about to begin treatment with lamotrigine. This study aims to investigate the impact of lamotrigine treatment on reproductive hormones and metabolic measures such as cholesterol in the blood, over a six-month period. Free open-label lamotrigine is available through the study. Participants use software to monitor their mood for three months and undergo two blood draws: one before the start of their treatment with lamotrigine and another six months after the start of treatment. Participants are compensated $50 for their involvement. For more information, call (650) 725-2528.
Estrogen Use in Protection from Cognitive Decline
We are currently conducting research to determine the effects of estrogen therapy on memory and cognition among postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 65, who are at risk for cognitive decline. Study participants are followed for 2 years and are asked to participate in neuropsychological testing, PET scan, MRI and blood draws. Participants are compensated. For more information, call (650) 724-9269.
Treatment with Memantine in Women at Risk for Cognitive Decline
This research aims to explore the effectiveness of memantine in treating post-menopausal women between the ages of 50 and 65, who at risk for cognitive decline. Participants receive open-label medication for six months and comprehensive neuropsychological testing. For more information, please call (650) 723-7845.
Insulin Resistance in Patients with Mood Disorders
Insulin resistance is known to be associated with mood disorders and cognitive difficulties. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential mood and cognitive effects of the insulin-sensitizing medication rosiglitazone (Avandia). We are recruiting men and women who have been diagnosed with depression and who are willing to participate in this 3-month study. Participation involves neuropsychological testing, 2 oral glucose tolerance tests, and treatment with rosiglitazone. Participants are allowed to continue on any current medications.
