Education

Rotations

Residents at all levels of training serve on organized clinical services in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, consultation-liaison, child psychiatry as well as several specialty clinics. There is ample opportunity to interact with training programs in related fields (e.g. neurology, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychology).  All wards and clinics offer a mixture of educational methods, including case conferences, didactics, lectures, rounds and individual supervision.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has established goals and objectives for each of the rotation venues which may be a part of the resident's educational program.

Since some of our residents enter the program in their PGYII year, Stanford offers two programs; a 4 year program, a 4 year research program and a 3 year program. For the most part the three programs are similar; for the few differences, please refer to the attached graph that displays samples of the three programs.

Call Duties

During their first three years as a resident, Interns are required to serve a period of on-call duty each year. When on-call the resident has three clinical responsibilities: 1) To evaluate all psychiatric patients in the emergency room and if needed admit them to the inpatient units, 2) Respond to any urgent psychiatric consults called in by another medical service, and 3) respond to any medical or psychiatric urgencies on the inpatient units.

Didactics

Residents are excused from clinical duties each Thursday afternoon to attend formal didactic instruction which is given weekly with regularly scheduled grand rounds, speakers, seminars, clinical case conferences and research colloquia. In addition, the PGY IV class participates in a journal club with the Chairman of the Department. This formal educational activity has a high priority in the allotment of residents' time. The didactic and clinical curricula provide residents with a thorough and well-balanced presentation of contemporary theories, schools of thought and major diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in psychiatry. Individual supervision in the evaluation and treatment of patients, for whom residents have a major responsibility, is also a high priority, and residents have nearly 150 clinical faculty to choose from. Regularly scheduled rounds on the inpatient wards are also considered an essential part of the learning process.

Evaluations

Residents are given an evaluation and feedback at the mid-point and end of each rotation by their attending physician. The following form is used for documenting this process.
