Santa Clara Kaiser Permanente Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic This clinic is the part of the Kaiser Permanente HMO that serves the Santa Clara County ("Silicon Valley"). Treatment focuses on crisis intervention; short-term psychotherapy; individual, group, couple and family therapy; pharmacotherapy and some consultation-liaison. Patients present with a variety of interpersonal problems and psychiatric disorders. Emphasis is on practical and flexible psychiatric treatment in today's medical world.
Residents see a varied and representative population belonging to a prepaid HMO. Patients tend to be well-motivated and treatment-responsive. 20-24 hours are typically spent in the clinic, about 12-16 hours seeing patients, with 2 hours of scheduled supervision weekly and additional ad hoc consultation for clinical administrative and personal issues. Faculty are available throughout the week
Case load varies depending on the type of work preferred by the resident. A typical case mix over the 6-month period might include 15 crisis intervention patients, 6 in individual psychotherapy for an intermediate period, 25-30 seen in short-term supportive psychotherapy (with or without psychopharmacologic treatment) and 30-50 patients seen for medication management in collaboration with other therapists. Emphasis is on practical and flexible psychiatric treatment in today's medical world. Supervision is scheduled on an individual basis, usually 2 hours weekly, with additional consultation and supervision as needed.
